The Faith Community Nurse Network has awarded $1,000 Mental Health grants to faith community nurses practicing in congregations throughout the Twin Cities to spark creative and meaningful programming efforts aimed at ending stigma, easing pain, and encouraging treatment and resolution of mental health issues. These grants have been funded in partnership with Hennepin County Human Services & Public Health Department and individual donors to our Annual Campaign. The Grantees describe their projects below and can be contacted for further information about project replication.

"ENHANCE YOUR LIFE" Four, two hour educational sessions addressing the importance of personal responsibility in achieving physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual health were offered. Professional staff from HealthEast were the speakers at all of the seminars. Topics were:
All sessions were well attended and evaluations were very positive. A celebration luncheon was held following the last gathering and was enjoyed by everyone. In reviewing the evaluations many indicated they learned a great deal and would be interested in attending another "ENHANCE YOUR L IFE" series next year. Also, seniors mentioned they appreciated that they were free! The luncheon gave folks the opportunity to enjoy each others company and also talk about the workshops they attended. The four monthly sessions were offered on Saturday mornings at St. Thomas the Apostle Church from 10:00 am – 12 noon. Use of the church facilities worked out well as Saturday mornings the building is almost always free. Attendance:

Faith During Our Older Years Companion compact discs (CDs) were developed for older adults and their caregivers to provide each with opportunity for short devotional “respite with God” at a place and time of individual choosing. The companion, but different, older adult and caregiver CDs provide opportunity for individual reflection, yet sharing of thoughts along the same theme. The CDs contain twelve reflections, each with devotional thoughts, Scripture, prayer and hymns along such themes as “Forgiving and Being Forgiven”, “I Will Sustain You”, “Tender Mercies”, and “The God of Hope.” This Faith Community Nurse Network grant-funded project models an ongoing way for faith communities to address mental health needs of older adults and their caregivers. CD copies were made available to faith community nurses at the NOAH project orientation and can be downloaded from the FCNN NOAH link Tip Sheet on “Maintaining Personal Faith.” |

At Brookdale Covenant Church the mental health grant was used to educate both adults and youth in the following ways: A speaker from Arden Woods Psychological Services spoke to a Sunday morning adult class about symptoms of depression, other mental conditions, the spiritual impact of depression and how faith can help a person through depression. There were many questions/comments at the end of the hour. On a Wed. eve. after a free meal, a second speaker from Arden Woods Psychological Services addressed the youth with the topics: what youth face today, what to do when you hear a friend talk about suicide, symptoms of depression, anorexia, and others.
Adults, particularly parents of youth gave the following comments: “learned something new, very good speakers, great information for my kids – and me, need to talk about this again- good to keep subject open”. Parents appreciated the information and handouts. Some of the youth were more open to discuss concerns with Wed. nite staff. Approximately 65 people, adult and youth, attended the 2 sessions.

Six synagogues collaborated to support the mental health of caregivers and their families. Each of the six congregations held a Nosh with the Nurse, an informal gathering including caregiver resources and social connections to create a supportive community. Each congregation also hosted a forum with a speaker or panel of speakers on a variety of related topics that were open to the public. A Resource Guide for Caregivers was compiled and distributed to attendees along with many handouts of supportive resources. These programs informed the community of services to support the mental health of caregivers as well as raising the visibility of congregational nursing in the Jewish community where it is a rather new phenomenon.

In 2004, the Faith Community Nurse Network established a collection of faith community nursing reference materials at the Hennepin County Library System. It was our intent to make these texts and materials available to practicing faith community nurses throughout our region and state via the inter-library loan system. The collection is based at the Brooklyn Center Library, 6125 Shingle Creek Parkway, Brooklyn Center, MN 55430.
